Here's a crazy thing about the Zipp Super-9 Tubular Disc Wheel. It generates lift. That doesn't mean the wheel will leave the ground, but that in some situations, it has negative drag, aka it's actually picking up your speed. This goes for all of the Super-9's, of course.
The wheel has grown out of Zipp's Sub-9 disc, which itself was an evolution from their 900, which is where Zipp began. The wheel shares a perimeter shape with the Sub-9, but rather than getting narrow, as the Sub-9 did, it stays wide all the way to the hub. This is not only more aero, but it's also stiffer, which makes it more efficient in many conditions.
The tubular version is 995g for the wheel. The wheel is 26.73mm wide at the center of the brake track, getting out to 27.5mm wide shortly below the track. This shaping, most specifically the non-parallel brake tracks actually helps with the transition of the air flow from the tire to the wheel and back. It's smoother and thus faster.
The hub built into this wheel is very close to Zipp's 188. It has a 17mm axle for stiffness, and the bearings are Zipp-designed to be oversized and roll faster than standard industrial bearings pressed into bike use.
The ability to convert this from road to track and back is very much of a piece with the way Zipp thinks about their discs. They know this is a highly-specialized, much cared-for component that could either see near-daily use or only occasional use. They know that their earliest discs are still being used over twenty years down the road. And they built this wheel to see that kind of use, so in twenty years time, you could still be using this wheel, provided you want to.
The wheel comes with a valve extender a Zipp quick release skewer, a set of Zipp Platinum Pro Evo brake pads, pump adapter for reaching the valve, and five Zipp stickers to cover the valve hole.
The Zipp Super-9 Tubular Disc Wheel is a World Champion and Tour de France stage winner. It can handle your races and manhandle the competition.
