Even if money is an object, sometimes we just have to give ourselves the best of something we love. If you like your cycling history, you’ll know that the Italian great Fausto Coppi rode a Bianchi Speciallissima to countless impressive victories. Keeping the same pedigree that represents the ultimate climber’s bicycle, the current Bianchi Speciallissima will take both your average speeds and your love of the sport to the next level.
As you would expect from any climbing machine, the Speciallissima is constructed using high modulus carbon-fiber. That’s a term that is bandied about a great deal, without folks knowing exactly what it means. In this case, Bianchi has used intelligently layered carbon-fiber and sandwiched it with Countervail, which is really the secret weapon of the Speciallissima. You may remember seeing certain bike frames with bizarre rubber inserts in the seat stays, for instance. What the Countervail does is act as a shock-absorbing material made from viscoelastic carbon with a structure that works to cancel up to 80% of all road vibrations. The holy grail of bikes has always been to create a frame that is stiff and responsive while remaining comfortable and compliant. Bianchi collaborated with Materials Sciences Corporations to develop Countervail to do what seemed before to be the impossible: have a very stiff, snappy ride without causing bone-shaking fatigue. What you’ll notice mostly, though, is how little you notice it. You’ll just feel a lot less tired after an 80-mile ride than you used to. But if you are lucky enough to have some long descents included on your training rides, you’ll really get to treat yourself to the brilliance of this frame.
The pure racing bloodline of the Speciallissima becomes apparent when looking at the geometry. The 74 degree seat tube angle in a size 53, invites you to ride comfortably in the drops without compromising comfort or breathing. If you’ve watched pros racing all day in their drops and wonder how they can stand it, it’s likely because they are racing racing bikes. If you have a super-stacked headset and slack tube angles, you’ll naturally feel most comfortable on the tops or hoods. But this is a bike for an aggressive position. And you’ll want to ride it aggressively, if only to take advantage of the amazing handling. The tapering head tube, which starts at 1 1/8” at the top to 1 ¼” at the bottom will work in conjunction with the frame material and geometry to convince you that no descent is too gnarly, no corner too tight. The headset is an FSA with alloy bearings and an 8.7mm carbon custom cone spacer option for a 47mm and 52mm head tube. When you get the fully built-up bike, the accompanying FSA K-Force seatpost comes with a 25mm setback that will also help to cushion the ride a little while keeping your position dynamic on the bike. Bianchi uses the seatpost with a setback because it can fit a large group of riders’ saddle positions, but if you need an extreme forward position, you can also use a zero offset post. The FSA K-Force compact handlebars and the FSA OS-99 CSI stem round out the built-up bike spec for the cockpit. If you are ordering only the frameset, you can chose and standard stems Ø31.8mm with a 28.6mm steerer clamp, and lengths ranging from 70mm to 130mm and you’ll be ready to rumble.
For the Speciallissima bottom bracket, Bianchi turned to a BB86 press fit bearings. They decided to go this route not only because it is a standard for Shimano, but it allows for a wider bottom bracket area that can be used to improve the rigidity of the frame. But even if you are not going with the Shimano build, you can use almost any other crankset on the market because they all offer a BB adaptor that will be able to accommodate this standard. The frame has been developed with internal cable routing guides, and is compatible with electronic and mechanical groupsets, depending on which way you want to go. Whether you order the Campagnolo EPS or the Shimano Di2 builds, you’ll get the Fulcrum Racing Zero Carbon Clinchers supplied with the race-ready Vittoria Rubino Pro Speed, 700x23mm tires. But if you want to wrap your hoops in something slightly wider at some point, or are simply buying the frame and decide on your own components, keep in mind that the maximum tire clearance for the Speciallissima is 25mm.
Technological innovation and inspirational tradition come together in one beautiful package with the Bianchi Speciallissima. Available as a frameset, or with either Campagnolo Super Record EPS or Shimano Dura Ace Di2, the Speciallissima will make you easily the most envied member of your cycle club. That will be a small price to pay in order to have in your collection one of the greatest bikes ever to come out of Italy.
